There are 2,598,960 poker hands that can be produced with a standard 52-card deck. Most video poker games make use of the combinations of hands that can be made from a standard deck.
The RNG inside the video poker machine is set to simulate the probabilities of drawing any one of these combinations of hands. With a set number of combinations that can be made from the cards used in each video poker game, the payout can be calculated by how much the video poker machine pays for each winning combination.

Not all video poker games use a standard 52-card deck. For example, a popular variation known as Joker Poker may have one or two Jokers added to the standard deck. Another popular variation, Deuces Wild, uses a 52-card deck but the deuces are wild cards. Newer variations include Bonus Poker, Double Bonus Poker, Double Double Bonus Poker, and Triple Bonus Poker.
Each variation of video poker offers different odds and a minimum winning poker hand. This can significantly influence your chances of making a profit out of the game. Some game variations have certain cards that are wild—either the deuces or a joker added to the deck, as earlier mentioned—and other variations have a cumulative jackpot that can be won by a high hand, such as a Royal Flush. The size of the available jackpot then also affects whether the game is worthwhile to play.
